This week Vable’s CEO, Matthew Dickinson, joined The Geek in Review hosts Greg Lambert and Marlene Gebauer for a discussion pondering the future of tech, how AI will change knowledge teams, and what Matthew has changed his mind about as tech has evolved.

The Geek in Review podcast launched seven years ago to explore creativity and innovation in the legal tech industry, and each week, they discuss a new topic. Often joined by an expert guest, genAI has been a recurring theme for the past few months.

And the discussion kicked off with the hosts asking Matthew what he thought had changed the most in how firms think about current awareness and news monitoring in the time of Gen AI.

Current Awareness and GenAI

Matthew said it is important to first explore what Current Awareness has been for the last few years:

“Until recently, current awareness has predominantly been about curating lists of articles - either manually or using some logic or boolean queries and filters - and sending the articles, often by email, to groups of recipients.

But AI has changed all of that - by which I mean expectations have changed dramatically.

Lawyers no longer want to receive a list of articles.. They want actionable insights. Answering questions such as why is this relevant to me and what actions should I take as a result. This is a massive game changer.”

The wide-ranging conversation also covered:

✅ How to manage the trade-off between AI automation and editorial oversight
✅ How to support best practice for client engagement
✅ Who should own KM in this changing landscape
✅ And what Vable’s CEO has learned in his years in legal tech
