A story of collaboration between client and law firm: Shell & Norton Rose Fulbright

Last week at #BIALL2017 I was lucky enough to find the time to attend some of the sessions from this year’s excellent speakers. One that particularly caught my attention was from Hilary Smith and Miriam Davis, where they recounted their experience of working together to provide an enquiry service to Shell’s legal community. Kudos to both Hilary and Miriam for delivering such an insightful and engaging talk, one which we are happily able to recap below.

Library and marketing: On friendship and competition

We’re seeing a growing trend towards a closer alignment between the marketing department and library teams as the two functions come to work together. Admittedly, this isn’t a particularly new trend but it is certainly one that is here to stay. Yet, even after years of discussing the benefits of collaboration, we are still learning how to make our businesses more competitive.

What does it take to build a successful library team?

It’s clear that there is no set path to becoming a Librarian. Many Librarians will have started out with careers in other fields and ‘side stepped’ over into Librarianship. Others will have begun with an internship or as a Library Assistant following their undergraduate degree in order to get their foot in the door. So what does it take to build a successful library team? If the backgrounds of Librarians are so diverse, is there actually a formula for a successful team? Or is it all guess work?

Smart collaboration – The winningest strategy of all

When I was asked to write this guest blog about the relationship between marketing and the library in law firms, I admit I was exhausted by the idea. Haven't we done this enough?  Don't we already know that marketing and the library should be working together to uncover intelligence, develop client insights and keep the lawyers in our respective firms market aware? But then, late last month (February 2017) LMA hosted a well-attended webinar entitled 'Library and Marketing: Why Can’t We be Friends?' so, maybe it is not yet a concept I should take for granted. Clearly I am an early adopter of this concept, one I have been practicing for at least a dozen years. And so, I write this blog – highlighting why we should not only be friends, but also strategic allies jointly aimed at increasing profitability for our firms and job satisfaction for ourselves.

The essential guide to managing a distributed library team

As technologies develop further, transport links make our world seem smaller and global business transactions become the norm, we are seeing more and more dispersed and distributed teams come into being. Writing for AALL, Doug Southard speaks of fifteen Researchers, located in nine different offices across four different countries at law firm WilmerHale, showing just how geographies and time differences seem to no longer be a boundary when it comes to international business.

Integration - the ongoing trend

I was recently reminded of an Ardent research study on Legal Tech trends for 2015. Published in July, we can now review thoughts on how accurate these ideas were for 2015.

Big Data and the library

As per Monday's post, this was the title of a SEALL session presented by Thomas Sneed and Christina Glon. I got the condensed version given by Thomas at the ALLA luncheon, but I recommend you see Christina's report on this experience in the AALL Spectrum: Faculty Scholarship Support. There is quite a bit going on in this story: big data research and management, but also communications, project management, internal education and more.

CMS - It’s all about the people

Harold Jarche writes about content management within an organisation. Of course a CMS is a necessary tool. But, he says, it does not do the work for you.
