Introducing the Essential Human Element of Artificial Intelligence

These notes are taken from a most satisfying CLSIG event with Alex G Smith. It was a timely wake up call for how machine learning is being perceived; instead of the marauding AI robots of horror movies, it should be the thought of messy misused data keeping us up at night. Above all it confirmed what most of us already know; that information professionals have been designing and providing ‘AI’ for years. Many things currently being touted as such are nothing more than data and algorithms. Analytics and automatic documentation is not AI.

Libraries at work: meeting, sharing, learning

This is the second in a series of blog posts which will come out of the recent BIALL conference in Birmingham. There were a couple of sessions which demonstrated that law firms and libraries are on the same page when it comes to working agile. But with a twist...

Librarians: Embrace the Career Revolution!

This is the first in a series of blog posts which will come out of the recent BIALL conference in Birmingham. The theme of ‘Designing our Future’ has never felt so full of possibility and excitement as we head into the third decade of this century. The session on ‘the career revolution’ spoke to us all in a particular way; a show of hands demonstrated that none of us had been unaffected by changes in the sector. No more is there such a thing as a job for life.

I’ve got designs on development: What BIALL 2018 means to me

I’ve attended more BIALL conferences than I care to think about but discovering the theme for each never gets old. The theme for this year’s BIALL conference ‘Designing our future: debate, develop, deliver’ put me in a thoughtful frame of mind because it goes straight to the point, with a practical three point plan. Inevitably it is not a new topic. From 1970 when Law Librarians were thinking of their next ten years, our conferences have always enjoyed exploring where we - and the industry - are headed.

Your BIALL 2018 Guide: Parallel Sessions, Speakers, and More

At Vable we’re as excited about BIALL’s annual conference as you are. With plans underway we’ve taken a look at the schedule and highlighted some of the sessions and speakers that look especially interesting. Here’s a look at some of the events that we feel are Must Attends.

Human or machine – why not human AND machine?

Continuing the theme of recapping #BIALL2017 we’re back this week to relive another fantastic session, this time from Nick West, Chief Strategy Officer and all round tech genius at Mishcon de Reya. This year’s BIALL conference focussed on the theme of “together or apart” which flowed quite neatly into Nick’s talk exploring the narrative of human vs. machine or human and machine.

Manchester: Your #BIALL2017 Guide

Following the events of May 22nd, Manchester has been in the thoughts of many of us around the world - not just for the horrific consequences of that day but also because of the clear strength and resistance of the city that has shone through. It is that grit and determination that makes Manchester such a key city in the landscape of Britain, and I’m sure is one of the reasons that the BIALL Committee selected it as the host of the #BIALL2017 Conference.

Recap of #BIALL2014

Thank you to all those who stopped by our stand at the BIALL conference in Harrogate. Sara Batts and Fiona Fogden had a great time meeting customers, friends and colleagues. It is no secret we’re both still Law Librarians at heart, still using the Information skills built up over the years in our work with Linex.
