#BIALL2019: Let’s (not) talk about Artificial Intelligence

The focus of BIALL 2019 was “Past Present Future”. Press releases are continuously pushing buzzwords like AI, legaltech, blockchain, fintech to generate public interest. But just how innovative are some of these tech initiatives? Whether it is establishing incubators for legal start-ups, appointing innovation managers, or partnering with tech teams at universities, the race for real innovation is on. But at what cost? How many of those systems are actually going to solve your problems in a practical way?

Reflections on Brexit - from #BIALL2019

Manchester 2017 saw us welcome David Allen Green for the first plenary session/ Willi Steiner Memorial Lecture on 'Informing the debate about Brexit'. Because this is still a relevant and contentious topic, BIALL invited him back to Bournemouth 2019 to give a follow up talk. Anyone who follows David on Twitter knows that he cuts through the political bias to give a clear, considered explanation of the legal issues. This was a good opportunity to get an overview as we head towards 31 Oct 2019.

6 Inspirational Women in the Library & Information World

I have to thank my friends overseas for introducing me to International Women’s Day. We’ve marched, sung, cried and debated - but ultimately we spend the day celebrating each other. It has encouraged me to think about the individuals who have - and continue to - shape the library and information profession. This is a list of women who have personally inspired me on my career journey. #BalanceforBetter !!!

Agile libraries: Case studies from the world of law

This is the fourth in our BIALL 2018 Conference series, and I can recommend you read it in conjunction with our other piece on agile working. Vable uses agile methodology to manage workflow, and it requires a mental shift if you are accustomed to a more traditional workplace. The more we collaborate and share experiences, we can make new ways of working possible in a corporate/legal library environment.

How business planning can help us prepare for the future

At Vable we believe that business skills for librarians are as essential as research skills. Through conferences and workshops together we can learn from each other and share best practice. Practical, immediately applicable sessions are always the most popular events at BIALL, and Claire Fox’s session was full. She focused on business planning and how we can assist our organisations in ensuring future success.

Libraries at work: meeting, sharing, learning

This is the second in a series of blog posts which will come out of the recent BIALL conference in Birmingham. There were a couple of sessions which demonstrated that law firms and libraries are on the same page when it comes to working agile. But with a twist...

Librarians: Embrace the career revolution!

This is the first in a series of blog posts which will come out of the recent BIALL conference in Birmingham. The theme of ‘Designing our Future’ has never felt so full of possibility and excitement as we head into the third decade of this century. The session on ‘the career revolution’ spoke to us all in a particular way; a show of hands demonstrated that none of us had been unaffected by changes in the sector. No more is there such a thing as a job for life.

I’ve got designs on development: What BIALL 2018 means to me

I’ve attended more BIALL conferences than I care to think about but discovering the theme for each never gets old. The theme for this year’s BIALL conference ‘Designing our future: debate, develop, deliver’ put me in a thoughtful frame of mind because it goes straight to the point, with a practical three point plan. Inevitably it is not a new topic. From 1970 when Law Librarians were thinking of their next ten years, our conferences have always enjoyed exploring where we - and the industry - are headed.
